Currently some solutions of biological detection for applications in the Food, Health, Environment and Defence sectors based on molecular recognition already exist in the marketplace.

Although molecular recognition technique is one of the most widespread solutions, in many cases its performance does not reach the needs of users for most of the critical applications:

  • Most existing techniques require prior sample labelling, which is an additional cost, time consuming and prevents the direct detection of the analyte.

  • Some of the existing techniques do not allow multi-analyte analysis.

  • The actual response time, depending on the type of analyte, can vary between one and several days.


The photonics technology proposed by LUMENSIA is also based on molecular recognition, however, it presents clear advantages in front of existing solutions: multi-analyte detection, fast (30min) analysis time, high sensitivity (ppb) and specificity (use of specific probes for each analyte), label-free and low cost.


  • Allergen management. The Food sector is facing new exigence of product composition control to avoid (or at least quantify) the presence of allergen components that could put the consumers at risk.

Fast, multi-allergen, accurate, label-free and cheap instantaneous portable systems are entering certification phase and will be rolled-out in the second half of 2018.


  • Fast pathogen identification. Food and Environmental sectors need a fast detection of pathogens in very different situations. The new devices detecting and identifying different pathogens in a short time will be a new milestone for ensuring safe operations in these sectors.

These product will soon enter the certification phase and are expected to be available during 2019

As a counterpoint, this called industrial civilization has induced environmental contamination. Air and water are continuously in danger due to industrial sector sub-products. In order to prevent the excess of contamination in those media, a continuous monitoring is paramount. Thanks to photonic technology it is possible the early detection of these agents, due to its high sensitivity and specificity that makes it able to detect low concentration of those agents in the media.
